Stephen Riley has exhibited in the UK, China and Germany and has work in private collections in the UK and continental Europe. He has work in a public collection: Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council, Greater Manchester. He is also a published author and retired lecturer in Fine Art and Contextual Studies for Art and Design. He lives and works in Bruton in the English county of Somerset.
Reflecting my own conflicting impulses toward rationality and romantic abandon, I am interested in the tensions within painting itself: between control and chance, the formless and the geometric, surface and space, objecthood and representation, presence and allusion, fragmentation and cohesion.
I am further interested in the experience of contemporary space in its various forms: urban, suburban, real, imagined, literary, virtual, photographic, televisual, architectural. This relates closely to the first strand, as surfaces, paint, erosion, visual communication and such are parts of real, lived-in space as well as aspects of painting. Whereas this is foregrounded more in my photography, it informs my painting to varying degrees.
These come together the creative process that brings these things together; those unpredictable, ineffable machinations of the mind that occur when working with ideas, materials and images in the studio, which result in finding a work’s own internal logic, which in turn shows a path to a particular outcome and/or further work. The result of this is that outcomes are not literal representations of some particular idea but are a synthesis of possibilities.
